Actor Michelle Kim talks about her upcoming play
Metamorphoses
Written by Mary Zimmerman
Directed by Christine Willes
Metamorphoses Theatre Company proudly presents Mary Zimmerman’s award-winning play, Metamorphoses, a modern retelling of the classic myths of Ovid. Enchanting, reflective, set in and around a swimming pool, Metamorphoses was hailed as “the theatre event of the year” (Time Magazine) in New York in 2002. Its Vancouver debut happens July 31 to August 16, 2008 at Pacific Theatre.
Metamorphoses includes 10 stories that were written 2000 years ago, updated (Phaeton is a whiny teenager on a therapist’s couch who wants to drive his father’s car) and relevant to today (Erysichthon is a man who is set on the destruction of natural resources). Linked thematically, (“let me not outlive my own capacity to love”), the stories flow from one to the other, transforming and morphing through the pool, which is more than the set—it is a character in the play. Creative and theatrical, Metamorphoses is also a feast for the senses.
