Head instructor Jack Paterson re-envisions Shakespeare’s romantic comedy in the 1950s – from Elizabethan court life to McCarthy-era society. Rosalind and Celia translate into all-American girls in poodle-skirts and bobby socks; the Forest of Arden becomes a den of beatniks and bohemians.
Shakespeare’s As You Like It establishes the boundary between courtly esteem and banishment – just as 1950s America stressed the divide between the patriotic mainstream and the rebels without a cause. Carmen Allatore’s bold design concept uses cinematic and cultural icons – James Dean, Elvis Presley, Joseph McCarthy, Jack Kerouac – as a visual shorthand to bring all the political and social tumult of the 50s immediately to mind within Shakespeare’s timeless story arc.
