Presented by: Baked Snake Productions

This is Our Youth follows forty-eight hours of three very lost young souls in the big city at the dawn of the Reagan Era: Warren Struab, a dejected nineteen year-old who steals fifteen-thousand dollars from his abusive lingerie-tycoon father; Dennis Ziegler, the charismatic domineering drug dealing friend who helps him put the money to good use; and Jessica Goldman, the anxiously insightful young woman Warren yearns for. Funny, painful, and compassionate, This is Our Youth is a living snapshot of the moment between adolescence and adulthood when many young people first go into the world on their own, armed only with the ideas and techniques they developed as teenagers - ideas and techniques far more sophisticated than their parents ever realize, and far less effectual than they themselves can possibly imagine.

Head instructor Jack Paterson re-envisions Shakespeare’s romantic comedy in the 1950s – from Elizabethan court life to McCarthy-era society. Rosalind and Celia translate into all-American girls in poodle-skirts and bobby socks; the Forest of Arden becomes a den of beatniks and bohemians.

Shakespeare’s As You Like It establishes the boundary between courtly esteem and banishment – just as 1950s America stressed the divide between the patriotic mainstream and the rebels without a cause. Carmen Allatore’s bold design concept uses cinematic and cultural icons – James Dean, Elvis Presley, Joseph McCarthy, Jack Kerouac - as a visual shorthand to bring all the political and social tumult of the 50s immediately to mind within Shakespeare’s timeless story arc.

“Love is merely a madness”

Metamorphoses Theatre Company proudly presents Mary Zimmerman’s award-winning play, Metamorphoses, a modern retelling of the classic myths of Ovid. Enchanting, reflective, set in and around a swimming pool, Metamorphoses was hailed as “the theatre event of the year” (Time Magazine) in New York in 2002. Its Vancouver debut happens July 31 to August 16, 2008 at Pacific Theatre.

Metamorphoses includes 10 stories that were written 2000 years ago, updated (Phaeton is a whiny teenager on a therapist’s couch who wants to drive his father’s car) and relevant to today (Erysichthon is a man who is set on the destruction of natural resources). Linked thematically, (“let me not outlive my own capacity to love”), the stories flow from one to the other, transforming and morphing through the pool, which is more than the set—it is a character in the play. Creative and theatrical, Metamorphoses is also a feast for the senses.

July 31-Aug 16 at Pacific Theatre - 1440 W. 12th Avenue.

Performances are Tuesdays through Fridays 8pm, and Saturdays at 7 and 9:30 pm.

Ticket prices are Tuesday through Thursday: $20/$18 and Friday through Saturday: $25/$23.

Take a walk through the deep, dark and lovely woods of Mount Douglas Park as ITSAZOO Productions brings a modern adaptation of the classic fairytales of the brothers Grimm to life.

Written by Sebastien Archibald, Grimm Tales takes audiences on a magical journey through the Enchanted Forest with rookie tour guides Hansel and Gretel on their first day of work for the Greater Enchanted Forestry Board. Along the way they encounter the fascinating inhabitants of the fantastical fairytale kingdom. Underscored and accompanied by the Bremen Town Musicians, audiences are re-introduced to the classic tales of the Frog Prince, Rumplestiltskin, Rapunzel and Briar Rose in a farcical and contemporary context. However, when Hansel and Gretel find themselves off of the assigned path and lost, they begin to discover “the woods are lovely, dark and deep”.

Grimm Tales unique outdoor theatre approach adds to the vibrancy of the Victoria theatre scene by providing audiences with the opportunity to appreciate art in harmony with the natural beauty of Vancouver Island,” states ITSAZOO co-artistic director, Chelsea Haberlin, who directs the show. ITSAZOO’s mandate is to create theatre in unconventional and found spaces.

The original production of Grimm Tales was the 2007 winner of ‘Best New Play’ in both the Victoria Critics Choice Awards and Monday Magazine ‘M’ Awards.

11 local companies perform 11 separate pieces in continuous rotation. Brace yourself for a carnival side-show, a piece of toy drama, a post-modern slice of faux dinner theatre … or different combinations of all that and more. The audience’s experience is entirely self-directed, and there’s always a lounge for shouting and a central party space to buzz the night away.

HIVE2. Don’t miss your chance to get pollinated. There will be more room this time.

Warning: Smoke, nudity, foul language and gunshots are all within the realm of possibility… Or none of the above
