Artistic Director Carole Higgins and Performer Todd Talbot tell us why we should see

Book and Lyrics by WILLIE REALE

Music by ROBERT REALE

written and illustrated by ARNOLD LOBEL

Featuring Todd Talbot as ‘Frog’ and Allan Zinyk as ‘Toad’.  With Darren Burkett, Janet Gigliotti and Kaylee Harwood

Directed by Carole Higgins

This amazing Broadway musical is coming to Vancouver! Following hot on the heels of two sold-out runs of Seussical, Arnold Lobel’s well-loved characters hop, sing and dance their way from the page to the stage! Conceived by Mr. Lobel’s daughter, Adrianne Lobel, A Year With Frog and Toad follows the cheerful and popular Frog, and the rather grumpy Toad through four fun-filled seasons.

Waking from hibernation in the spring, these two great friends proceed to plant gardens, swim, rake leaves, go sledding, and learn life lessons along the way, including a most important one about friendship and rejoicing in the attributes that make each of us different and special.

Don’t whistle in the theatre, refrain from uttering lines from the play, and never say ‘Macbeth’… a few rules that the teen actors of Carousel Theatre’ Teen Shakespeare Program get to learn this summer. In August 2009, 15 teens from across the Lower Mainland will tread the boards on Granville Island in a gothic retelling of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. The haunting tragedy of vaulting ambition in the castles of Scotland- a murdered king, evil witches, and a Scottish lord’s bloody rise to power!

Carousel Theatre’s Teen Shakespeare Program, now in its 19th summer, is an intensive 6-week program for teen actors (ages 13-18 years). Under the tutelage of a professional director, teen actors are led through an intensive 4-week rehearsal process of a 90 minute version of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy, and the program culminates in a full FREE production for the public- in the same time frame as a professional theatre production.

Macbeth will be showing at Performance Works Outdoor Stage, 1218 Cartwright Street, Granville Island.

Monday to Saturday from July 31st to August 15th at 7:30pm
2:00pm matinees on August 1st, 8th, and 15th.

Previews will be on July 31st at 7:30pm and August 1st at 2:00pm.

The performance is FREE!

However, there is limited seating, so please arrive early for the best seats. Bring a
blanket for when the sun goes down- it can get chilly near the water. This production is great for all ages, but please
keep in mind that there may be some scary parts.

As You Like It
July 30, 2008

Actors Keegan Flick-Parker, Sofie Newman and Emily Snee tell us about their upcoming outdoor production of

Presented by: Carousel Theatre‘s Teen Shakespeare Program

Free Play!

Head instructor Jack Paterson re-envisions Shakespeare’s romantic comedy in the 1950s – from Elizabethan court life to McCarthy-era society. Rosalind and Celia translate into all-American girls in poodle-skirts and bobby socks; the Forest of Arden becomes a den of beatniks and bohemians.

Shakespeare’s As You Like It establishes the boundary between courtly esteem and banishment – just as 1950s America stressed the divide between the patriotic mainstream and the rebels without a cause. Carmen Allatore’s bold design concept uses cinematic and cultural icons – James Dean, Elvis Presley, Joseph McCarthy, Jack Kerouac – as a visual shorthand to bring all the political and social tumult of the 50s immediately to mind within Shakespeare’s timeless story arc.

No matter when or where, one thing is certain –
“Love is merely a madness”
